How to type symbols on an iPhone or iPad

A phone has no Alt key and no numeric keypad, so none of the Windows codes apply. What iOS gives you instead is press-and-hold, an emoji keyboard, and a replacement list you can teach.

Press and hold

Hold a key for its variants: 0 on the number keyboard holds °, the currency key holds the other currencies, and every vowel holds its accented forms. Slide onto the one you want and let go.

The 123 and #+= keyboards

Most punctuation and maths signs are one of those two layers down. What is not there is not reachable from the standard keyboard at all.

Teach it a shortcut

Settings › General › Keyboard › Text Replacement. Paste the character into Phrase and type something you can reach into Shortcut. It syncs across your devices through iCloud, and it is the only way to get an arbitrary character onto an iPhone keyboard.

Every character on this site copies on one tap. For a character you need once, that is the whole method.
